Our Most Important Identity

Some sayings of Jesus are easier to "get" than others. The series of verses from Luke 9 chosen for today's Gospel are some of the harder to "get"...

Luke 9:60

But he answered him, "Let the dead bury their dead. But you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God."

Some sayings of Jesus are easier to "get" than others. The series of verses from Luke 9 chosen for today's Gospel are some of the harder to "get" ones. Jesus seems to tell a would-be follower to not bury their father and to follow Him instead. On its face, this verse seems to diminish the necessity of funerals altogether. However, that is not what Jesus is saying. He's telling us that being a disciple is something that should be given priority over everything else. Nothing is more important. Lord, help us to see following you as not just a task we accomplish but as the focus of our life and our most important identity.
