Daily Scripture Reflections

Hey Alexa...

Monday, July 02, 2018 • Davis
Many of us don't even have to pick up a phone or computer to do any of these things anymore, just shout at Alexa and you're all set...

Matthew 8:20

Jesus answered him, "Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.

In this day of digital downloads, Uber and overall instant gratification it seems like everything comes easy. We have "one click" shopping on Amazon with same day delivery. Grubhub will bring us dinner from our favorite restaurant. If you feel like cooking it yourself Blue Apron can be on your doorstep multiple times a week with the ingredients and recipe already chosen for you. Heck many of us don't even have to pick up a phone or computer to do any of these things anymore, just shout at Alexa and you're all set. We live in a great age of convenience. However this is not a 21st century phenomenon, we have been looking for the easy road since the beginning of time. The problem now is that we have transferred this easy to get instant gratification into other aspects of our lives. Things like relationships and life goals still need to be worked hard for.

In today's reading we see a Scribe promise to follow Jesus wherever he goes. Jesus' answer may seem a little weird at face value but what we need to remember is that Jesus knew this scribe's heart. The scribe wanted to follow Jesus because he wanted an easy road to prosperity. The Jews thought the Messiah would be a king by the worlds standards. But Jesus clues the scribe into the hard truth. Basically he's telling the scribe "Look dude, we are roughing it here. I sleep wherever I end up that day. It's often in the dirt, not in a palace of the King of the Jews". Jesus gave us the example of walking a hard road. Are we going to be the scribe who just wants things to come to him the easy way? Or are we going to be a Jesus follower and seek the hard road?
